A clever woodpile house shelters and feeds insects while looking stunning.

You’ve heard of a bug hotel, but what about a Bug House? This isn’t so much a house as a palace. It was part of a show garden by Chew Valley Trees at this year’s Hampton Court Flower Show, and now lives at Bristol Zoo Gardens.

It was inspired by the endless forests of Eastern Canada, hence the lovely trees (though these came from the Chew Valley Trees nursery, rather than Canada).

Landscape architect Elinor Scarth supplied the materials for the woodpile house from her family’s coppiced wood.

And in the end, the garden won a silver-gilt medal and was featured on Gardeners’ World.

But that’s not the end. Because it now lives forever at Bristol Zoo Gardens, sheltering and feeding wildlife for many years. What a good idea.
