Cosy fireside life

F&F reviews a fireside companion set for warm evenings.

There are few things more lovely in the middle of winter than a nice cosy fire. Oh of course, we love rambling around the garden in the rain, pruning and clearing until our fingers are numb. But we also love snuggling up in front of the fire and anyone who claims that the latter isn’t preferable to the former is, as we all know, telling porkies.

This year we opened up our old fireplace in our cottage and installed a wood burning stove. We’d felled a dead tree at the back of the garden and so there is plenty of wood waiting to be burned. And in the evenings and all day at the weekends, we have fires.

Between fires, I clear out the wood ash and dump it on the strawberry bed, as it contains vital nutrients for the plants. And to clear that ash, and to stoke the fire up and move logs around in the woodburner, I use this Duchess fireside companion set from Dorset Log Stores.

Dorset Log Stores were kind enough to send these tools to me for review, and they are perfect for my small woodburner. They’re also rather smart.

I particularly like the stiff-bristled coconut coir brush, which allows me to clear the tray and grate out quickly, as well as the small pan, which is useful when you have a reasonably small fireplace as I do.

These black iron tools look as though they are made to last a long time, but they aren’t stupidly heavy, which is good. Their stand is chunky enough, though, to withstand the rough and tumble of life in a house where there are frequently cats and young children running around. You don’t want a lightweight stand, even if the tools themselves are easy to use.

So I would recommend this set to anyone else setting up a fire. And I’d recommend a fire to anyone in need of a little cosiness this year.
