Bay trees

Bay trees are smart and stylish - especially in smart planters.

What a marvellous herb the bay laurel is. It adds such a rich warmth to dishes, and as it’s evergreen, it can often be the only ‘fresh’ herb available when you’re cooking big hearty herbs in winter.

It’s also a smart little customer, and gives a garden real class if you grow it as a standard bush.

These very healthy-looking bay standards came from the magnificent Gardening Express. I maintain that I’ve never received such good quality plants from any other online supplier. These are certainly good evidence of that.

Obviously you need to prune your bay standard to ensure it stays in the lovely lollipop shape that it arrived in. Either that, or you need to make sure you’re harvesting enough bay leaves regularly to keep the tree in shape without pruning. But what lovely scented prunings!

These bays are in some very smart planters indeed. I haven’t planted them fully in there yet purely because our compost heap needs another couple of weeks before its contents are sufficiently well-rotted to use, and I do try as best I can not to buy bags of compost in when I just need to be patient.

But look at how smart these ivory planters are. They’re from Primrose and are sturdy, terribly easy to put together, and a beautiful colour too.

Some planters are a real pain. They look nice, but the effort of putting them together is just too much. The wood splits, the screws don’t fit, and the whole thing feels as though it might fall apart at any moment.

This was one of the best planters we’ve ever assembled. And it looks as though it will last a good while too. Which is good, because we want this lovely planting combination to last for a good while.

I love bay trees. We’ve got one growing in the old metal water tank that came out of our loft!
